DESCRIPTION:
Joy A. Shabazz Center is a nonprofit, consumer
oriented, Center for Independent Living (CIL), providing advocacy,
peer counseling and peer support, independent living skills training,
information and referrals, with other related services for persons
with disabilities. We currently serve five NC counties: Guilford,
Alamance, Caswell, Randolph and Rockingham. The Board of Directors,
which began with three members, now encompasses eight members, with
at least 51% (currently 75%) of these having a significant disability.
Of the remainder who are not disabled themselves, these members
have a vested personal interest in the disability community.

HISTORY
The Joy A. Shabazz Center for Independent Living was originally
founded as the Guilford Advocacy Project for the Handicapped,
but also used its familiar name The Advocacy Project for Persons
with Disabilities (TAP). It was founded Oct. 2, 1992 by Joy
and Aaron Shabazz, two persons with significant disabilities.
In memorial to its cofounder Joy, the Center is now officially
named the Joy A. Shabazz Center for Independent Living. Original
members of the Board of Directors included Joy and Aaron Shabazz
and James Wells.

The Center's
purpose is to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities
by providing services in accordance with our guidelines as outlined
by the four core services listed above. Also the Center serves
as liaison linking with other area agencies to pool resources
and establish interagency cooperation on the consumer's behalf.
Our mission is defined by the title of our newsletter “Self
Advocacy” News. (See downloads.)
The Center provides services to all persons with disabilities
of all ages, including but not limited to:
